Michel Baik Obituary

BAIK Michel Baik, age 49, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of Laurie Freer Baik and devoted father to Andrew, Thomas, and Margaret; died heroically in the line of duty as a Bridgeport Firefighter on Saturday, July, 24, 2010. Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of Farid and Mary (Bal) Baik. Michel was a graduate of Central High School Class of 1978. Michel found his true passion in life when he joined the Bridgeport Fire Department in 2007. He proudly served as a Firefighter and was assigned to Ladder 11 which was stationed at Engine 7 Ladder 11 on Ocean Terrace. He was a member of Union Local 834 and the Bridgeport Fire Department Color Guard. Prior to becoming a Firefighter, Michel was a dedicated and admired computer skills instructor at Career Resources, a non-profit workforce development organization, where he taught computer skills to the unemployed. He was a distribution manager at the Connecticut Post for many years. He also was a Systems Operator at Norelco in Stamford and a Senior Computer Operator at Alcon Data in Bridgeport. As a devoted father, he participated fully in every aspect of his children's lives. He coached JV basketball and was active in the Boy Scouts, chaperoned countless school trips, and sat through hours of school plays, sporting events, and dance recitals. The kids knew Dad was there when they heard his signature whistle at the end of every performance. Michel was a lifelong member of St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church in Bridgeport and was active in many church organizations since his youth. Michel will always be the undisputed "Mr. S.O.Y.O. 1987" Michel was an avid sports fan. He loved his Mets and Jets (J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets!). He played on the Central High School football team and played on various softball and basketball teams throughout his life. Most recently, he was a member of the Bridgeport Fire Department softball team. Above all, Michel will forever be remembered as a teddy bear of a guy with a great sense of humor and a kind and caring heart. In addition to his wife of 22 years and their three children, Michel is survived by his mother Mary Baik of Bridgeport, a sister Dr. Rania Baik and her husband, Robert Dion of Brooklyn; his mother-in-law Frances Freer of Shelton; his sisters and brothers-in-law Frances Freer, Susan and John O'Neil, Pete and Jennifer Freer, Beth and Luke Frazza, Patrick and Kim Freer. He was predeceased by his father, Farid and his father-in-law, Peter A. Freer, Jr. Michel was part of a large extended family and was a loving and caring uncle, nephew, and cousin. His 12 nieces and nephews; Kathryn, Spencer (his Godson), Meghan, Erin, Colleen, Peter, Henry, Olivia, Matthew, Annie, Christa, and Patrick; adored their Uncle Mich. He was like a son to his maternal uncles, Father Deacon Sami Bal (his wife Susan), George Bal, Haysam Bal (his wife Odette); his maternal aunts, Yvonne Barbar (her husband Foud). His paternal aunts Selma Dib, Lorraine Zabaneh (her husband Raja). Friends may call at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull on Thursday, July 29, 2010 from 4 to 8 p.m. Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Friday, July 30, 2010 at 2 p.m. MEETING DIRECTLY in St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church, 5458 Park Ave., Bridgeport. Mitch, it's been a few weeks since.... but I will tell you pal, knowing that you and Steve aren't around, definitely puts one huge void on the company. I worked overtime on your shift the other night, it was a good day. Your kids came by and finished up the grill project you had plans of doing and they did one heck of a job. I also thought about the last time we talked. Our conversation was about the people we work with and how they go through all walks of life, just like us. Then one thing I will never forget is when you said, "I was the first friendliest face you have seen on your 1st hour on the BFD." We were at the watch and I come in to see my placement on the rig. Right there, we shook hands and introduced ourselves and then spent the entire 3 days at work talking. That was a very good time.

Mitch, when the time does come for me to go home, I'll meet you and Stevie at the watch desk. Rest well brother and god bless you.

Mitch, I stopped at Norelco yesterday and talked to many of your past co-workers. Everyone is still in shock. We talked about all the fun times we had. Also with all the many employees no one ever had a bad thing to say about you. When we had a computer problem we called you complaining that we needed it fixed immediately. You showed up right away to find us all in miserable moods. Somehow you managed to not only fix our computers but make us forget why we were so irritated to begin with. You will be missed by all of us. You were a great Husband, father, family member and friend. Thank you for giving us many years of your cheerful personality and for being our big huggable teddy bear. We are glad that you got to fulfill you life long dream of becomming a firefighter. You made the ultimate sacrafice of your life. You died as you lived - Putting everyone before your self and giving everything to help others. You will be forever in our hearts, Patty Greer and your many former Norleco co-workers.

I knew Mitch when I took his computer class at Career Resources. He was a big man with a big heart. I enjoyed taking his class. He was a big teddy bear and a soft spoken man. I was and still am deeply shocked and sadded at the passing of Mitch. Know that myself and those who knew Mitch and those who did'nt have you and your family in our thoughts and prayers. Mitch, let the whisper of a soft breeze tell your family that your watching over them always and that your near them always. God bless the Baik family. Charlene Payne. Bridgeport, CT.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Lord, those who die still live in Your presence, their lives change but do not end. I pray in hope for the family of Michel Baik, relatives and friends, and for all the dead known to You alone. Firefighter's Prayer
When I am called to duty, God
Whenever flames may rage
Give me strength to save some life
Whatever be its age.

Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person
The horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling and
To give the best of me
To guard my every neighbor and
Protect his property.

And if according to my fate
I answer to death's call,
Please bless with your protecting hand
My family one and all.
