Peaceful journey old friend...

As Chairman of the Transit District, Walter stopped by the office every day. He would make the rounds, saying “hello” to everyone, and seeing what everyone was up to. He and my Dad (who worked at GBTD) were very, very good friends. Every day, at the end of his rounds, he would go into my Dad’s office and they would talk. Dad passed away 9 years ago. During his illness before his passing, Walter would stop by now and then and visit. He was the only one from GBTD to do that. Not that no one else cared – it’s just one of those things that’s easy to not get around to doing. But that’s just the kind of guy Walter was – if you were his friend, nothing would make him forget you and he would always be there and stick up for you if things were going against you. After Dad passed, I continued working at GBTD myself, occupying his old office. Walter continued stopping by and he would sit in that office with me, reading the paper, taking a nap here and there, making a phone call or two. We would talk about different things and, through those talks, he became somewhat of a second father to me. I learned an awful lot from Walter in the time I knew him. Those lessons will always be remembered and are a large part of who I have become – I am definitely a better person for having been fortunate enough to have known a guy like Walter. Walter was the last of the good guys and his loss leaves a hole in this world that can never be filled.
