William B. Davidson
William B. Davidson Jr, 94, of Fairfield, Connecticut passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, May 10, 2018, in San Francisco, California.
He was born September 7, 1923, in Holden, Massachusetts to the late Dr. William B. Davidson and Doris (Lane) Davidson. His wife, Phoebe, and son, Paul, preceded him in death. His survivors include daughter Laura and her husband, Michael, of San Francisco and Bear Valley; son William and his wife Rebecca of San Francisco; granddaughter Natalie of Washington, DC; granddaughter, Sarah Haupt and her husband Kolby of Randolph, Vermont, and great-grandchildren, Kianna, Kendrix and Kesler.
Bill lived his early years in Worcester, Massachusetts, graduating from Classic High School in June 1942. He entered Dartmouth College as a member of the class of 1946. In February 1943 Bill enlisted in the US Army Air Forces, serving until February 1946, honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He returned to Dartmouth and through an accelerated program graduated June 1948. During his undergraduate days, he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.
In June 1948 Bill married Phoebe Randolph of Worcester, Massachusetts. Their marriage lasted almost 58 years until her death in 2006. After several business moves including New York City and Chicago, Illinois, the family settled in Fairfield in 1963.
The family was members of St Paul's Episcopal Church. Bill served three terms on the vestry including one year as treasurer. He was also active as liturgical assistant and usher. He especially enjoyed his duties as a wine steward at the St Nicholas Fair and as a busboy at the Memorial Day Pancake Fundraising events. Bill enjoyed people and a good laugh. He was fond of sailing, skiing, and golf. Bill was a life member of the Fayerweather Yacht Club and had been a member of Pequot and Black Rock Yacht Clubs. He was a member of the Bridgeport Contemporary Club and the former Bridgeport Comedy Club.
Bill's business career was always in the field of employee benefits. First as a salesman for companies offering group life insurance and pensions, then an ENA Senior Associate with George B Buck, consulting actuaries as a benefits consultant and finally concluding his career as the Associate Secretary of the Federal Reserve Employee Benefits System. He retired in 1990 but continued to work on a part-time basis until 1992.
At full retirement Bill volunteered with the CT Department of Social Services, working with the new CT Partnership Program for Long-Term Care, consulting with CT residents about ways to meet the costs of nursing homes or home health care. He also mentored for the School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport.
A memorial service to be held at St Paul's Episcopal Church, 661 Old Post Rd, Fairfield, CT 06824 on Thursday, September 27 at 11 a.m. Instead of flowers, contributions appreciated to St Paul's at the above address for ongoing maintenance of the Memorial Garden. Private interment held with family in St Paul's Memorial Garden.
