Ellen Cotner Elmore Obituary
Longtime resident, Ellen Cotner Elmore passed away peacefully at her home here in Carlsbad on July 10, 2018 at the age of 98. She was born in Huntington, Arkansas on December 14, 1919, the daughter of James H. and Ricie (Varner) Cotner. She was valedictorian of her high school class. Ellen married Paul Huston Elmore in 1940, and they moved to Carlsbad in 1945 after WWII. Her husband Paul Elmore worked as an electrician for U.S. Borax and P.C.A. until retirement. Together they raised three sons in Carlsbad. Her ambition was to be a good wife and mother and to help keep all these men in line. Ellen worked in the dress department at JCPenney's for many years. She was a member of Hillcrest Methodist Church for decades until it closed.
She was well known for her love and dedication to her family, her love of gardening, her delicious cakes and pies, and her service to the Lord. She will be remembered for her kindness, wisdom, and good sense. Family and friends frequently sought her out for advice.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Paul Allen Elmore and Gary Lyn Elmore and siblings: Alene Kee, Eva Godwin, Jick Cotner and Thomas Cotner.
Ellen is survived by one son, Steve Elmore and his partner Linda Wiener, by two grandsons, Paul Elmore and his wife Vanessa of Santa Fe, and Adam Elmore and his wife Angela of Salt Lake City, UT, and two great-grandchildren, Samantha and Roman Elmore. Survivors also include her two dearly beloved nieces Jimmi Marrs and her husband Johnny Marrs and Marie Ryan and her husband Jim Ryan of Carlsbad, and their children.
Graveside services will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, July 13, 2018 at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Larry Krueger of Mt. Sinai United Methodist Church officiating. There is no visitation. Services have been entrusted to West Funeral Home. Condolences may be expressed at westfuneralhomellc.com.
