Funeral services for Lonnie Gene Smith, 65, of Mountain View Drive, Carlsbad, NM, will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at the West Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor, Dick Means of Cavern Baptist Church will officiate and Elks Ritual will be provided by the Carlsbad Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. 1558. Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery (new section). Respects can be paid on Saturday from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at West Funeral Home. Condolences may be expressed at westfuneralhomellc.com
Lonnie Gene Smith was born on August 29, 1952 in Carlsbad, New Mexico and passed away peacefully in his home on August 8, 2018.
Lonnie was employed with Western Ag for 22 years as Loading Dock Supervisor and then worked with Van Tassel Proctor until his retirement. He was very active in Carlsbad Elks Lodge 1558 and was Exalted Ruler from 1994-1995. His greatest achievement was achieving All American Lodge.
Lonnie lived a fulfilling life as a loving Daddy, a caring brother and son and a friend to many. He enjoyed singing and playing his guitar with his brother Rodger and telling jokes to his grandkids. He will be greatly missed for his unique sense of humor and immense care for others.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sally Faye (Lynch) Smith, brother, Rodger D. Smith and sister, Carolyn Elaine Bates. He is survived by his father, William W. "Bill" Smith, loved by Darlene, and his children Shane, Lagena, Shawna, Robby, Melissa and husband Jason and Tara and husband Jacob and his grandchildren and great-grandchild.
Pallbearers: Jason Swagerty, Tristen Swagerty, William Swagerty, Jarrad Burkham, Zane Portillo, Cade Portillo, Shane Mcleod and Brent Wilson. Honorary Pallbearers: Cannon Shipler, Robby Smith and Jeffery Oliver. Speakers: granddaughters Kayla M. Oliver and Kira N. Shipler.
