Ernest Thomas "Ernie" Brown Obituary
Ernest Thomas "Ernie" Brown, 86, passed away Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, comfortably at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Dec. 9) at Bright Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dan Grindstaff and the Rev. Don White Sr. Interment will follow at Mesa Cemetery in Gila.
Mr. Brown was born Aug. 29, 1924, in Buckhorn, and was the ninth of 10 children. He rode his horse to Silver City in 1942, and had called it "home" ever since. He served in the Navy in the Pacific War Zone from 1944-46.
Mr. Brown was always an entrepreneur. Through the years, he had the Silver Cab Co., eight service stations, two mobile home parks, Mountain Wrecking, Buckhorn Trading Post, Brown Fish Farms, and other ventures, with always visions for more. However, his passion was always the car business. He opened Brown Auto Sales in 1955. Over the years, he had locations in Silver City, Truth or Consequences and Deming. He sold the business in 1989.
He never met a stranger. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and minister where he could. In the late 1960s, Mr. Brown served Silver City as mayor. Through the years, he lived by the motto: "Extend courtesy and respect and require the same."
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Christine; daughters: Rena Turner (Jeff), Karen Hewitt, Jackie White (Don Sr.), Kitty Collyge (Billy Joe) and Cindy Taylor; 11 grandchildren: Paul Turner, Lanice Turner, Deanna Hanson, Chad Hewitt, Kami Hewitt Anciso, David White, Don White Jr., Clay Collyge, Casi Lane, Zach Taylor and Zane Taylor; 35 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Drummond; a brother, Harold "Ike" Brown; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nancy Louise and George Ernest; one son, Marvin Vernon; four brothers; and three sisters. Pallbearers will be the Brown grandsons.
