Alvaro Franco Urquidez Obituary
Alvaro Franco Urquidez died Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, following a brief illness. Alvaro (aka Al or Bob) was born Aug. 28, 1950, in Loving, N.M., and spent his early childhood on a small family farm near Loving. He graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1969.
He served in the U.S. Army (1970-73) during the Vietnam conflict as a Vietnamese linguist, earning a rank of Specialist 5th Class and a number of medals including: National Defense Service, Bronze Star, Joint Service Commendation and Vietnam service and campaign medals.
Alvaro worked for the US Postal Service for more than 30 years and was working at the University office at the time of his death. He was active in the Postal Workers' Union and an ardent defender of the worker's rights. Alvaro was an active member of his neighborhood association and a licensed AFLAC insurance agent since 2005. Alvaro was an optimistic, energetic and driven person whose compassion for others, especially those less fortunate, was inspiring. He will be missed.
Alvaro is survived by his mother, Victar Franco Urquidez; sisters: Celia, Eva and Onayda; brothers: Manuel and Blas Jr.; partner, Ryan Jacobsen; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Alvaro was preceded in death by his father, Blas Lujan Urquidez on April 8, 1994.
Visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, at Daniels Family Funeral Services Carlisle Chapel with a rosary to be recited immediately following at 7 p.m. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral mass from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2012, at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church.
