Funeral services for Nora W. Robertson, 92, of West Pierce Street, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 12) at the West Funeral Home Chapel with Terry McKean, Chaplain with Lakeview Hospice, officiating. Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery (old section). Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday with the family receiving guests from 4-6 p.m. Friday at West Funeral Home. Nora Winifred Robertson, a local artist and teacher, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013, in Carlsbad just two days short of her 93rd birthday.
Born on Jan. 11, 1920, in Rhyl, North Wales, to Eustace W. Lycett and Martha Constance Walley, Nora lived in England, Chile, and Death Valley, Calif., with her mining engineer father who was employed by U.S. Borax. The family settled in Carlsbad when Nora was a teen. She graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1938, and from Occidental College in 1942, with Phi Beta Kappa honors.
Nora married James M. Robertson in 1942. The couple raised two daughters, Nancy and Sheila. Nora was an award winning local artist and sculptor. She taught art at Carlsbad High School and NMSU-Carlsbad over her long career. She enjoyed swimming, playing the piano, her pets and was devoted to her children and grandchildren.
Nora is survived by daughters: Sheila Schroeder and Nancy VandeKraats and husband, John of Carlsbad; and grandchildren: Jeff Willis of Los Angeles, Calif., Steven Schroeder and wife, Paula of Carlsbad, Kate VandeKraats of Pleasant Grove, Utah, and Tom VandeKraats and wife, Susan of Albuquerque; and six great-grandchildren.
