I think of Mary often. I remember her when I come across a recipe she gave me. I think of her in spring when my irises bloom. I gave her some for her garden. Whenever I catch Tom Skilling's weather forecast, I smile as I think of her in her Skilling tee shirt. I'm so glad I got to work with her.

I had the honor of working with Mary from the time of her employment at Hinckley-Big Rock until my own retirement in 1999. Mary was an excellent classroom teacher, devoted to the hundreds of students she taught over time, and contributed greatly to the overall school community. She had a great sense of humor and was always cordial and professional. It was a great shock to me upon hearing of her sudden passing and I extend my deepest sympathy to her family.

Mary taught alongside my sister, Mary Coleman, for many years in the connected lab rooms at Hinckley-Big Rock High School. They were great colleagues and friends, and provided the kind of mutual support that anyone would wish from a true friend.
When my sister passed away in 2008 in similar circumstances, Mary Gunier showed our family what a true friend she really was. She took the time to write a long and beautiful letter recounting specific memories of the good times and fun they had teaching together. It was so touching, and it helped us to heal a bit. We cherish that letter today.
And Mary kept in frequent contact with me - spontaneous notes and holiday cards - always with a bit of news about her life, and recalling memories of her time with my sister. I wish I had responded more frequently.
I think the community must know that Mary Gunier was a great educator, but I wanted to provide an anecdote about her wonderful character. She was kind, thoughtful, sincere, and very caring. I'm sure she was widely loved.
My heartfelt condolences to the Gunier family on your loss.

Mary was a great teacher and one of my favorite colleagues at H-BR. From the first I was impressed with her knowledge and love of science. I was also impressed by her willingness to work with all students. She had a great sense of humor. She was a big fan of fellow scientist, Tom Skilling. I enjoyed being the junior class co-sponsor with her. Mary was also a wonderful crafter and a great cook. Some of my favorite recipes are ones I got from her. There are many infants that have enjoyed being swaddled in soft, beautiful afghans crocheted by Mary. Certainly, Mary will be missed by family, friends, students and colleagues.
