Joe Clayton Mahan
June 30, 1924-Feb. 14, 2013

Joe Clayton Mahan, 88, of Bloomfield, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013. Joe was born June 30, 1924 in Mountainaire, to Gus and Effie May Mahan.
He grew up in Farmington with his four sisters, Clara, Elsie, Wanda and Francis.
Upon graduation from FHS in 1943 he enlisted in the US Army. He fought in WWII and survived the Battle of the Rhineland and was honorably discharged May 27, 1946. When Joe returned from WWII, he married his childhood sweetheart, Melba Henley in August of 1946.
Joe joined Mountain Bell Telephone Company that same month. He was a dedicated employee for more than 36 years.
He was a caring husband, an amazing father to his children, Marsha Loraine Mahan and Joe Clayton Mahan II ""Little Joe.""
Upon retirement in 1982 Joe and Melba built their home in Farmington where he lived until his death. Joe remained focused upon his family and friends through out his life. He will be sorely missed by all.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Clara, Wanda and Francis.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Melba; sister, Elsie McConnell, of Pensacola, Fla.; daughter, Marsha L. Wells, of Grand Prairie, Texas; his son, ""Little Joe,"" of Farmington; four grandchildren, Steven Wells, of Grand Prairie, Texas, Christine Stringer, of Olympia, Wash., Aubree Shepherd and Maggie Mahan, both of Farmington and 8 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Joe's life will be 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Calvary Baptist Church, 103 N. Heights, in Bloomfield with Brother Jennings Hamilton officiating.
Pallbearers are Charles Wells, Steven Wells, Jamie Stringer, Tom McConnell, Shawn Shepherd and Sterling Mahan.
Internment will follow in Memory Gardens of Farmington.
Joe's care is entrusted to Cope Memorial Chapel, 404 W. Arrington St. in Farmington, 505-327-5142.

Just found out today (3-14-13) about Joes passing. Joe was my boss in the mid 1960 with the phone co and I had always said to myself if I ever went into Management I would try my best to do as Joe had done and I did from 1972 till 1990.It has deen several years, but the last time I visited with him I left his home with alot of fresh vegs and cannned good from Melba Thanks for all you did for everyone Joe you were a GOOD MAN. I'm deeply saddened that Joe has passed away. He was a great family man and we will all miss him very much. I remember Joe always with a smile on his face. My thoughts and prayers are with Melba, Elsie, Marsha and her family and "Little Joe" and his family.
