David ""Dave"" McRee Thomas, 73, of La Plata, passed this earthly life on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, in his home. David was born to Edward McRee and Elva Cheney Thomas on Nov. 15, 1939, in Durango, Colo.
He graduated from Farmington High School in 1958 and worked in the oil field. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to start a business named Northwest Cathodic Protection in 1976, which operated until 1989. He then turned to sales, construction and worked as a pipeline or fiber-optics inspector. Dave was very outgoing and loved adventure. He earned his pilot license, owned planes and began aerial photography. Then through his love for guns, hunting and teaching, he developed the La Plata Shooting Range and a Conceal Carry Program.
His parents preceded him in death, as did wife Linda Vice Thomas and daughter Stacey Eileen Thomas.
He is survived by his brother, Ted (Toni) Thomas; his wife, Lei Nani; children, Kelly (John) Thomas-Coyle and Eric Thomas; step-sons Bryan Adair and Hank (Jyl) Adair; grandchildren Elizabeth Coyle, Sean Coyle, Kellci White and AJ Thomas; step-grandchildren, Brandon and Lauryn Adair and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 12, at Brewer, Lee, Larkin Funeral Home, 103 East Ute St. in Farmington.
Graveside services will be 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, in the La Plata Community Cemetery, U.S. Highway 170, in La Plata.
