Van Dowell Craddock Obituary
Van Dowell Craddock, 87, avid fly fisherman, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2014, in Farmington. Born in Bogota, Texas, and one of four brothers, Van served as a decorated U.S. Marine in both World War II and the Korean War. He continued his selfless service as a firefighter for 25 years with the Los Angeles County Fire Department in California. His passion of fly fishing held him fast throughout his life and holding a fly rod and casting a line was as natural to him as breathing. Van eventually moved to Farmington, to be close to the San Juan River and to the trout he so dearly loved trying to outsmart.
As a resident of Farmington for 20 years, Van is survived by his wife of 43 years, Diane Craddock. His favorite children were unquestionably his San Juan rainbows and brownies. He also loved his two children, Vicki Bretz and Valerie Potter, step-children Marilyn Lutz and Steve Myers, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren
Van had an uncanny ability to understand and size up an individual's strengths and weaknesses within moments of their first meeting.
Husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, fly fisherman, armchair philosopher, student of humanity. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Van's care is entrusted to Alternative Choice, 804 N. Dustin Ave. in Farmington, 505-325-9611. Those who wish to express their condolences may do so at
