Dr. Huitt Barfoot Obituary
Dr. Huitt Barfoot, 94, of Colorado Springs passed away September 7, 2018. Huitt was born in 1924 in Hanceville, Alabama to a poor country preacher and sharecropper Talmer Alphus Barfoot and his wife Harriet Lowena Abercrumbie Barfoot. He was the ninth of ten children. He grew up on a cotton farm and graduated in 1942 from Risco High School, Missouri. During the war he worked for the Army Corp of Engineers on the Alaskan Highway but did not serve in the war due to injuries from an automobile accident. His college career began with a BA degree in theology from William Jewell College and ended with a doctorate at the University of Missouri. His career began as a sharecropper, then Baptist minister, teacher, head basketball coach, and school principal. In later years he was a school superintendent at Brighton, Hayden, and Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was a founder of Colorado Baptist College and served as college president from 1968-1970. Huitt loved fishing and hunting and often returned to his cabin on Truman Lake in the Ozarks.
He was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers and sisters, and his wife, Frieda Hester Jackson Barfoot. He leaves behind James and Gayle Barfoot of Farmington, New Mexico, Sara and Cliff Mays of Scottsdale, and Cindy and Dean Perry of Kit Carson, Colorado. His grandchildren include Jeff Barfoot of Dallas and Melissa Martinez of Farmington, Sara, Cindy, and Molly Mays of Scottsdale. His great grandchildren are Calder and Milo Barfoot of Dallas, Addysen and Miles Martinez of Farmington, Harper Lee Henry and Zoey Mae Ziegler of Scottsdale.
Arrangements are being made by Evergreen Funeral Home in Colorado Springs.
