Derryl R Herring Obituary
FARMINGTON
Derryl R. Herring
June 6, 1936 – May 4, 2012

Derryl R. Herring passed away peacefully in Farmington on Friday morning, May 4, 2012 with his wife and daughter by his side. He was born in Mesa, Ariz. on June 6, 1936.
Derryl was adopted by Charles and Grace Herring when three days old, and raised in Toadlena, with his sister Jill. It was there that he developed his deep love and appreciation for the Navajo people, language and culture.
The Herrings moved to Farmington when ""Derry"" and Jill were teenagers so they could attend Farmington High School.
After graduating from high school, Derryl attended Brigham Young University where he received both a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and a Master's Degree in Children's Music.
While serving a mission in France for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Derryl met the love of his life and wife of fifty years, Michele Dunoyer.
He served faithfully in all of his church callings and lovingly provided countless hours of service his entire life.
Derryl joyfully taught music to hundreds of elementary school children in Farmington, Kirtland, and on the Navajo Reservation for over thirty years. In addition to teaching music, Derryl wrote hundreds of hymns, children's songs and choral arrangements, which were published both individually and in book form.
He was also very gifted in photography, drawing and painting, and writing poetry, and was an avid reader.
Derryl loved performing on stage, and was active in local theater and opera productions. His musical and cultural contributions to the community cannot be measured and will be remembered for years to come.
Derryl leaves behinds his wife, Michele; his mother, Grace; his children and grandchildren; his son, Andre and Maria Herring and their children Ariele, Brandon, Rachelle and Derek; his daughter Ariane and Scott Borgia and their children Jeremy and wife Carrie, Jonathan and Andrea; his son Pierre and Lori Herring and their children Matthew, Lindsey, Michael and Louisa; his sister Jill Lorah and her children Charlotte, Charlene and Clifton Jr.; members of Michele's family in France; numerous cousins and many, many dear friends.
A closed-casket gathering of family and friends will be held 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Friday, May 11, at Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home, 103 East Ute St., in Farmington.
Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 400 W. Apache St., in Farmington with Bishop Carroll Carter conducting.
Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery, 6917 East Main St. in Farmington.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Derryl's name to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund or the LDS Missionary Fund. Donations can be sent to the LDS Church in care of Bishop Carroll Carter, 2412 Ventana Circle, Farmington, NM 87401.
Derryl's family wishes to express thanks for the prayers, cards and other kindnesses they have received during this time. A special thanks to the youth of the Farmington 7th Ward for creating a CD of music that Derryl thoroughly enjoyed. Adieu, Derryl.
Derryl's arrangements are entrusted to Brewer, Lee & Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St. in Farmington, 505-325-8688.
