Roland Ridgway Obituary

Roland Lawrence Ridgway, Sr.

Roland Lawrence Ridgway, Sr., born in Los Angeles, California on October 8, 1928 to Robert and Addie Ridgway, passed away on February 20, 2014 in Marina Del Rey, California. Being the youngest of 5 children raised during the depression, his life was not without challenges. He gained inner strength by overcoming polio as a young child. He graduated from Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, and he became active in the United Methodist Church, where he met his future wife Barbara in the choir. He attended L.A. Trade Tech and became an assistant Engineer. He worked in the aerospace industry for several companies, retiring from Hughes Aircraft Company. He was a Past Master of Westchester United Lodge 529 and joined many organizations within the Masonic orders. He and his wife Barbara were active in The White Shrine of Jerusalem, Eastern Star, and The Order of the Amaranth, among others, where he served in many leadership roles. Roland also found time to pursue his passions for genealogy, photography, home improvements, and tending to his roses. He was a devoted husband and father to whom no one was a stranger. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, kind and loving heart, faith in God, and devotion to his family. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara of 58 years. He is survived by children James Ridgway, Roland Ridgway II, Lauri Fernandez and John Ridgway; son-in-law Ken Fernandez; grandchildren Matthew Matranga, Annamarie Fernandez and Kimberly Fernandez, and many nieces and nephews. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, February 26, from 6-8 P.M. at Douglass Family Mortuary 500 East Imperial Ave, El Segundo. Funeral services will be on Thursday, February 27, at 1:00 P.M. at Westchester United Methodist Church 8065 Emerson Ave followed by a brief reception. Interment will be at Inglewood Park Cemetery. Donations can be made in his honor to Orthopaedic Institute for Children via their website at ortho-institute.org.

Jim, Roland, Lauri & John -

Our hearts go out to you at the loss of your dad. He was a wonderful man, son, brother, friend, uncle, husband and father.

When I was a young boy, I hadn't realized he'd suffered from polio or what that even meant. Our grandmother would not allow us to be victims and his handicap was never a barrier. He built backyard walls, new additions for his and our grandparents' homes and was ready to climb into any small space to fix the plumbing or rewire a faulty light.

He was active in his church, his lodge and in the scouts; proudly raising his sons to be Eagle Scouts. I have fond memories camping at Pismo Beach with the four of you, joined by my brother Gary and cousin Susan (and a million mosquitos at night).

Uncle Roland was a constant strength in our family. He was a loving and giving man. We always knew how to reach him and that he'd be there in need, loss and celebration.

Marina and I were please to celebrate Aunt Barbara's and Uncle Roland's 50th anniversary. We were pleased to have them visit with us here in our nation's capitol - to meet my family and wander through our historic sites.

We will miss his family stories, his wit, and the intricate descriptive of every little mechanical thing.

Grace and peace to you!

We have enjoyed Roland and Barbara as in-laws" ever since our son married Lauri. We have had very loving and fun times over the course of those years, which included several Christmas vacations in Dallas, staying at Ken & Lauri 's home. Roland had a deep love for his family members, and he considered us part of that family. Love them both and they will both remain in our hearts forever and will never be forgotten.

I remember Mr Ridgway from church and choir. He and Mrs Ridgway were always so great to us kids and involved in everything we would do. He was a great and loving man.
