Scott Charles Rush
March 28, 1975 – December 29, 2017
Scott Charles Rush, born in Anaheim, California, has left the world a better place. He'll be remembered for his peaceful sense of being, his quiet yet poignant sense of humor, his loyal friendships, and immense personal integrity.
As a youth, Scott was a sharp boy who excelled at many things. He graduated Class of '93 from Palos Verdes Peninsula High School and from the University of California, Irvine, in 1998 majoring in Psychology. Always drawn to children, Scott found his calling at Rolling Hills Country Day School where he taught math, coached sports teams, and departs as the Head of Middle School. He loved his students and famously closed class with an assignment beyond arithmetic to "Be Good Humans".
His own humanity was a playful mix of compassion, kindness, humor, patience, and the ability to be fully present wherever he was. He was many people's best friend and most especially his wife's, Rachel Togut, whom he married August, 2016.
Scott accepted his GBM diagnosis with dignity, bravery, and a touch of humor. He will be missed deeply by his beloved wife, Rachel, his parents, Nancy Van Acker Beck, Charles and Jerri Rush, and Bob Beck, his in-laws, Cathie and Michael Togut, his grandmother, Betty Van Acker, his siblings, Ashley Beck and Amy Rush Conroy, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and every student that crossed his path. He was a blessed man, a gift to all of us, very loved, and we aim to "Be Good Humans" in his honor everyday moving forward.

I never knew what Mr. Rush was truly like ever since I entered RHCDS. I've been attending the school for about 9 years now and this is my last year here. The most I knew about Mr. Rush was that he was an amazing teacher that taught everybody with passion. I would have loved to have Mr. Rush as a teacher and I feel he would've been someone I looked up to.

Mr. Rush was my son's math teacher during very difficult years for an adolescent boy. He bonded with my son over discussions about sports and March Madness teams -- and made him feel special and noticed. He has always held a special place in the hearts of my son and us parents. He was truly a great man. RIP Mr. Rush. And to your family: please know there are many just like us. We loved him.

I remember Scott as Mr. Rush, my 7th grade math teacher in 2007. He was the best-- he'd give me cool music recommendations and hang out with us at lunch. He also come to every one of my ballet performances, and I remember seeing his smiling face in the audience at countless Nutcracker performances. HE was truly one the kindest, warmest people I have ever encountered.
I think about him often, as I will continue to for a long, long time. Thinking of Mr. Rush and his family at this time. I am so grateful to have known him.

My best memory of Scott is when I had the great opportunity to live in his family in 1983. He and the whole family became a part of my life. I love you as my own family, and there's a hole in my heart today and forever. ❤

EVERYTIME I saw or thought of Scott I remember when my father offered him (I think) $5.00 (might have been $20.00) to eat a hot pepper when Scott was a teenager. So there Scott was, at our kitchen table eating the pepper and with every bite he looked like it was a bad deal getting worse...but he couldn't bring himself to tap out as there were at least a dozen eyes on him. He made it through the challenge and started drinking milk. Lots of milk. Too much milk... I'm not sure if he thought the money in his pocket was worth the trip hovering over the toilet on his knees, but he completed the task with a sweaty forehead and a mouth on fire!
