Georgia Claessens Obituary

Georgia Storm Claessens

1955-2016

Georgia Ann Claessens (Storm) passed away on February 27, 2016 following a horse riding accident at age 60. She died in a tragic accident doing what she loved - riding with the wind. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends. She will be dearly missed.

Georgia was born to parents Walter and Lisa Storm in Los Angeles, California on November 22, 1955, the fourth of five children. Georgia lived most of her life in Rolling Hills, California, first moving there with her family in 1956. She began horse riding at age two, and she and her sisters (known to many as the Storm girls) had a robust life riding competitively in the English riding world jumping hunters and jumpers and competing in California and the East Coast. She never stopped riding, participating in Jumper classes at the HITS Desert Circuit only two weeks before her passing.

After graduating from Miraleste High School Georgia went on to UC Santa Barbara. At UCSB she was a member of the Gauchos legendary 1972-74 women's volleyball team that advanced to the semifinals at the AIAW National Championship Tournaments in three consecutive occasions. She and her teammates were inducted into the UCSB Gaucho Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014. Georgia continued to play competitive beach volleyball for many years after she graduated.

In the early 1980's Georgia met and married Dominique Claessens VIII, and they moved to Holland together where they lived for 5 years. In 1988 Georgia and Dominique returned to the Palos Verdes Peninsula to raise their children in a childhood that mirrored Georgia's own, and eventually had four children together. She lived the rest of her life in Rolling Hills.

In 1991 Georgia started Mulligan Family Fun Center in Torrance, a family centered place of fun for so many in our community. Mulligan has since grown to three locations (including Palmdale and Murrieta). Georgia was an accomplished businesswoman – in addition to Mulligan she owned a landscape company, participated as a Board member at Storm Industries, and was an active participant in several other businesses.

Georgia leaves behind a family that she loved deeply: daughters Fontine, Gemma, and Celine Claessens, son Dominique Claessens IX, Fontine's husband Stephen Garcia, and sisters Alexandra Storm, Claudia Storm Grzywacz, and Elizabeth Storm McGovern (a fifth sister, Paula Storm predeceased her). Georgia also leaves behind a large extended network of family and friends who were near and dear to her heart but are too numerous to list.

Georgia was a thrill seeker, an athlete, an adventurer, a traveler, a risk taker, a go-getter, and an entrepreneur. She loved anything with adrenaline, and approached everything with full force. And if you were willing, she loved to take you right along with her, always ensuring that "everything will be fine..." Her idea of "vacation" was bicycling 60 miles a day through France, or heli-skiing every year in Canada, or spending 6 days on her own hiking through the Sierra mountains. Whatever adventure she was on, she lived it to the fullest, always with a smile on her face.

She loved bicycling (she completed the 525 mile AMGEN Classic from San Francisco to Los Angeles and the Courage Classic in Colorado), loved skiing, loved the outdoors, loved traveling, but more than anything, she lived to be on a horse. Whether she was galloping at 35 mph across the fields of Ireland fox hunting, soaring sky high over monstrous jumps at a frightening pace, or herding cattle at the ranch, she loved the power and thrill of these beautiful animals. And she was absolutely superb at it. Everyone says there was no horse she couldn't ride, and even with the wildest of ones, she made it look so easy.

She was so proud of her life and her accomplishments, but what she was most proud of was being a mom and she raised four kids with such grace, and such love, and such generosity, it's hard to imagine a better mom. She was always there when they needed her, but gave them the strength to stand on their own. She gave them courage and poise and a sense of adventure.

But her capacity to love stretched beyond our family. She was nothing if not generous. Many of you reading this today that knew her have felt her helping heart. What she was best at giving, though, was her friendship and contagious love for life. Ever giving even after death, per her wishes her organs were donated so others may continue their adventure.

A memorial service will be held at Green Hills Mortuary in Rancho Palos Verdes on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Georgia's memory to Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Please make checks out to: Peninsula Committee Children's Hospital (or PCCH), P.O. Box 801, Palos Verdes Estates, CA, 90274 (please include Georgia Claessens name in the check memo). Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.

Georgia Storm...the name alone sounds adventurous and destined to take its own course. For some reason looked Georgia up after many many years...she was my roommate are UCSB, and what a funny little thing she was, just sweet, like a giggling grinning star. We paneled the entire living room with 'free' wood as Goleta was very cool and super hip and just for asking the cute lumber guy whom lived in an old on land boat said, "Sure, ladies you can have it all for free." Georgia was a miracle grow girl and put handmade planters all over the newly paneled walls, that quickly became outburst with foliage and flowers. It was always open house to visit the flower forest. I was working on my masters and continually reading notating, would fall asleep and a very late night returning
Georgia would say, "Hey, you are buried in books again,", and kindly remove them. Very colorful personalities in the building where we lived...a guy named Joe whom would belt out '40's" Jazz songs from the 3rd floor inner balcony(my best friend then.) Georgia then was already a highly accomplished volleyball circuit award winner, additionally well known throughout state competitions for English Riding .. even in my hometown amongst those whom participated in the shows. A fast flash of time, I departed for Los Angeles and The Art Center, Georgia rambled away on Campus Afloat. We exchanged writing for quite some time, called at some later point and news was she's off bicycling across Europe and I had gone off to foreign countries to work and adventure with all the energy a young person can get away with in their early 20's. The world just got bigger and bigger. Georgia was much adored by many cute boys, they would wait and wait and wait to see her and finally leave as she was flying all over with volleyball competitions. Would come rocketing through the front door with all that long long hair grinning and explain, "We Won!" What a lovely memory of a short clip in time. Why? Why? Why? All that charming energy now racing across the sky and I only knew her as a very young lady, briefly but now recalling "Golden Years...like the David Bowie song lyrics "Nothing's Gonna Touch Us In These Golden Years." Everybody was riding horses along the beach near campus, and Joe and I were too, and belting out "Nothing's Going To Touch In These Golden Years." Read all the tremendous accomplishments acheived by Georgia! A power with which to be wreckoned once upon a time, a very long time ago.

I was introduced to the Storm Girls and family when I was in the 6th grade, at Dapplegray through my friend, Krickett. Claudia Storm was and instant friend. Later I met Georgia through Sandpipers. She was such a beautiful Lady! I am so grateful to have known her. Her passing has left such an impact on so many, including myself. I know I will live life to the fullest as she has inspired us all to do. God Bless her family and friends.

My heartfelt condolences to the family. Always cherish the memories that you have and remember that God is always there for us like it tells us at 1 Peter 5:6,7. I hope you continue to feel the love and support from your family and friends.

March 14, 2016

Dearest Georgia,

You will be missed by all who knew you. We became friends in Holland, both married to Dutchmen. You loved to come over and have dinner. Calling on the phone what do you have for dinner? Can we come over? We were in the American Women's Club together, you the treasurer and I the president. Through the years we have shared our lives, our heartaches and joy. Although we lived in different states or sometimes countries we always managed to see each other. Sometimes we had marathon talks on the phone.

The world is a better place because you were in it and your children will carry your love and passion for life with them always.

Loving you always,
Susie

I'm so sorry for your loss. May the God of all comfort grant you peace at this difficult time. ( Psalm 119: 76 )

March 14, 2016

Dear Georgia, I will miss you forever. Thank you for a friendship that spanned almost 50 years. I'll never forget our bicycle ride through Europe, our volleyball games, badminton games, trampoline jumping, visiting you in Holland, and your visits to NYC, but most of all your kindness and positive energy. Thank you for being there through both of my parents' passings. Thank you for being in the room with me when my mom took her last breath. I told you you didn't have to do that, and you said "Marie i don't have to be your friend". I am so blessed that I got to see so much of you these last years when I visited home to see my mother. My heart goes out to all your family. Love always, Marie

We were very saddened to hear about Georgia's untimely death. I have many fond memories from the years that I headed up security for Mulligans in its start up years. She was a lot of fun to work with and treat to be around. I wish I could of attended the funeral services. I retired from Torrance Police Department in 2000 and moved to the state of Georgia. Our prayers are with all of the family in this trying time. God bless all of you and may Georgia rest in peace with the Lord.

To the Classens children and Dominique, I am so sorry. I am Veronica's brother, and met Georgia and you first on Rocking Horse Road when you lived across from Veronica and Mickey. Out on the road there, Georgia was most welcoming, friendly and confident. She was the same whenever we met again.

I am amazed at the life she built - the businesses, the active life, and being the great mom to you children. And she was the best friend I could have hoped for Veronica. Take care.

My sincere condolences to the family. Georgia was one of the smartest and classiest woman I have ever known. My heart goes out to you kids - Dominique, Fontine & Gemma, whom I used to care for and help do homework with, before Mulligan, when I worked for Georgia years ago - you kids used to affectionately refer to me as "Miss Diane." If I were not out of town this wknd, I would have for sure be joining to paid my respects at the funeral this wknd, I am sorry to miss it. I will be thinking of you all this Sat. - Diane Stapleton
