Alma Snodgrass Obituary
Alma went to be with the Lord on December 28, 2010 at the age of 90. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at home, surrounded by her loving family. Alma was born on July 18, 1920 in Kansas City, Missouri, the eldest of 6 children born to George Yee Young and Ellen Young. Her mother had a heart for China and named her Tao, which means Peach in Chinese. Alma graduated from Academy High School and attended a business college in Erie. Unable to find work during the depression, Alma moved to Bakersfield and finally Los Angeles, California in the 1940's. She married and had 4 children and then remarried in the 1950's and had 2 additional children. Alma moved to Torrance and worked as a supervisor of medical transcription at Harbor General Hospital, retiring after 20 years. She enjoyed transcribing and continued working at Kaiser Hospital. During retirement she traveled throughout China, Europe, Canada, Hawaii, and Mexico. Alma had a passion for life and loved taking classes; oil painting, watercolor, ceramics, jewelry, photography, Chinese brush painting, Ikebana floral arranging and more. Alma's greatest love was her family and her children. She enjoyed the large family gatherings, where she laughed with that little twinkle in her eyes. Her quiet strength, passion and love for people were a blessing and will be forever remembered by those who knew her. Alma is survived by her sisters, Beulah Coleman, Mary Yee; children, Ron Richards, Patricia Richards, George Richards, Cynthia Snodgrass, Dura Young; and four grandchildren. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Ocean View Baptist Church, 1900 Western Avenue, San Pedro on Saturday, January 15 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Salvation Army, Torrance Corps, Attention: Angela Ohl, 4223 Emerald Street, Torrance, CA 90503 or the , Los Angeles Coastal Cities Unit, 5731 W.
