Alvin Hughes Obituary
Alvin M. Hughes 1926 - 2015

Alvin M. Hughes Jr., a long-time Hawthorne School District administrator and 54 year resident of Palos Verdes, had a beautiful and active life end on February 25, 2015 with family at his side. Born in 1926 in Amery, Wisconsin to Alvin and Carrie Hughes, Alvin Jr. moved to California when his father went to work in the Wilmington shipyards during World War II. During the war he served in the Philippines with the U.S. Army. After the war, marriage, and an eventful, middle of winter motorcycle ride from Wisconsin to California, Alvin graduated from USC and began a 50 year career in education. He taught at Hawthorne Intermediate for several years before serving as Assistant Superintendent of Business. After "retiring," he served as interim Assistant Superintendent with the Wiseburn, Lawndale, Culver City, and Palos Verdes school districts. He also served for many years on PVUSD's committee to oversee $85 million in school improvements. Alvin was also involved in many community groups, as a member of Neighborhood Church and the PV Breakfast Club and a past president of both the Hawthorne Rotary Club and Hawthorne YMCA. He is survived by his wife Jean, daughter Yvonne, son and daughter-in-law Steve and Sue, son Tom, sister Orpha Gorman, grandchildren Laura, Aaron and Jenny, and great grandson Evan. A memorial service will be held at Neighborhood Church in Palos Verdes on March 7 at noon, with a graveside service at Green Hills Memorial Park on Friday March 6 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Pulmonary Education Research Foundation or the Rotary Foundation.
