Alvin L. Rosenthal Obituary
Alvin L. Rosenthal

Alvin L. Rosenthal, beloved husband of Nancy Pearson Rosenthal, passed away June 14, 2016 of complications from pneumonia and Alzheimers disease. Survivors include his wife Nancy and daughters, Virginia (Luis) Gonzalez, Eileen (Peter) Kurucz, Lynne (Russ Tomas) Esther, and Allison (Greg) Webster (from his first marriage to Nancy Pierce) well as his step-sons Mark (Liz) Pearson and Scott (Karen Staniskis) Pearson. He was the proud grandpa to 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Al was born in Iowa July 14, 1931. He came to California courtesy of the US Navy and decided to stay. Following his military service and graduation from UCLA, he became a certified public accountant, a profession he enjoyed for over 45 years. He opened a practice in Torrance in 1975; the firm (Rosenthal & Pearson, CPAs) is still in business today. Al and Nancy enjoyed both a professional partnership and a long happy marriage.

Al was a man of many talents and interests. He taught college-level accounting and was an instructor for the California CPA Education Foundation. As a private pilot, Al flew his plane at every opportunity. An expert skier, dancer, woodworker and photographer, he was never without a project or activity. Over the years he designed and built two lovely custom homes. He sang with the South Bay Coastliners chorus for over 15 years. Al was selected to be chairman of the first parks and recreation committee for the city of Rancho Palos Verdes, a position he held for many years.

Membership in Rotary International was Al's way of giving back to the community and the world for more than 50 years. He exemplified the motto of "Service Above Self" by filling multiple leadership and outreach roles. He especially enjoyed hosting many exchange students from around the world. Al and Nancy were active members of Neighborhood Church and participated in many service projects there as well.

His outgoing personality, willingness to help, and wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held August 2, 2016 to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution in Al's name to the of So. California, Breast Cancer, or Neighborhood Church. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
