Ante "Tony" Golem Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ante "Tony" Golem of Torrance, California on January 18, 2012. He died at home with his family by his side after a long battle with lung cancer. Tony was born in Bisko, Croatia and was one of eleven children. He came to the United States when he was twenty-five years old and met the love of his life, Joan. They were married for 54 years. He worked in the grocery industry for fifty years. He started his career at Boy's Market and ended his career at Marina Market in Marina Del Rey. Tony's philosophy was to help people where he could; it was better to give than to receive. In 1994, he was awarded the Republican Senatorial Medal of Freedom. It is the highest honor that the Republican members of the United States Senate can bestow to a person. He was awarded this medal for his humanitarian relief in having local grocery stores donate supplies to fill over fifty 100 ton containers with food, medicine and other badly needed items for the ravaged citizens and nearly one -million refugees in the war-torn Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. He would say, "If what I do will help feed one person or help save one life then I'm happy." He also enjoyed playing golf, spending time with his friends and family and taking trips to Laughlin and LasVegas. He is survived by his wife, Joan; and children, Mary Schulist (Keith), Diane Vrcic (Mickey), Kathy Dement, Carol LaFever, Paul Golem (Julie) and by his grandchildren that he loved very much, Rose, Brandon, Heather, Lauren, Ryan, Michelle, Samantha and Rebecca.
