Anthony Ursich

September 25th, 1930 - May 16th, 2017

Anthony Ursich of Lomita passed away Tuesday following a brief illness. Anthony was born in San Pedro on September 25th, 1930 to parents Jack and Marica Ursich and lived his entire life in the Harbor Area, graduating from San Pedro High School in the Winter Class of 1949. He attended the Frank Wiggins Technical Trade School (predecessor to LA Trade Tech) and graduated as a Master Carpenter in 1951. Although he maintained a life-long love of and incredible artistry in fine woodworking and cabinetry, he joined Star-Kist Foods shortly after high school and became manager of their extensive Terminal Island Fish Room Operations. Employed there for over 35 years, he retired in 1985 following closure of the plant. He subsequently worked for Pan-Pacific Fisheries in a similar capacity for several years but concluded his career as an industry consultant with assignments in Costa Rica, Guam, Thailand and Spain in the early 1990's. Anthony had a wide network of friends from many years in the Fishing Industry and his retirement was spent on home improvements, woodworking, investing in the stock market and enjoying time with family and his friends especially those at the Sunday morning San Pedro Fish Market coffee conversations. He was the "go to" person for securing the freshest possible seafood for family gatherings and dinners, especially Christmas Eve celebrations. Anthony was also a founding member of the Star Harbor Credit Union in 1956 and remained active as a board member for many years. Always impeccably dressed with a wonderful smile, kind heart and gentle soul, Anthony will be greatly missed by a lot of people whose lives he touched in many ways. Anthony is survived by his beloved wife Ernestine, Stepchildren Dorothy (Bob) Briggs and Jess Ybarra; Grandchildren John Ursich (Mayra) and Shayna Marsh, son Anthony Marsh (Vicki); Sisters Thelma Felando and Anne Bogdanovich; Sister-in-law Faye Brad; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, a great granddaughter Charlie Ursich, as well as additional step grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Visitation will be on Wednesday May 24th from 3pm to 8pm at McNerney's Mortuary, and Funeral Mass on Thursday May 25th at 10:30am at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Good Samaritan Hospital Heart Fund, or other charitable organizations of your choosing.
