Barbara Colbert Obituary
Barbara Ann Colbert

Barbara Ann Colbert passed away on September 4, 2016.
She was born in Great Falls, Montana, on October 12, 1926 to Vincent and Eethyl Hungerford; the family moved to High River, Alberta, Canada where Vincent worked in the oil fields.
Several years later, the Hungerfords moved to Los Angeles. Barbara graduated from Gardena High School and went to work for May Company. She was just 19 when her mother, Eethyl, passed away.
On December 29, 1946, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Torrance, Barbara married Ralph Colbert, a student at UCLA and California Aero College. Two years later he would be hired as a design engineer for Hughes Aircraft Company.
Barbara and Ralph lived in Glendale, bought their first house in Lakewood, moved to Inglewood where they raised their three kids, and finally settled in Torrance.
The family enjoyed many weekends in Crestline at the beautiful cabin Ralph built. Barbara taught Sunday School at Holy Faith Episcopal Church where the family attended. She was Girl Scout Leader for both daughters. She served (and received Honorary Service awards) in many positions in the PTA, including three terms as president.
When the kids were older, Barbara returned to college, and in 1973, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. She continued to volunteer- one organization in which she served was the Altrusa Club of Redondo Beach. At St. Cross Episcopal Church, Barbara and Ralph had various positions for almost 40 years- Barbara served a term as President of the Ministry of Women in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles.
In 1975, Barbara founded the South Bay chapter of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and served as Director. She received the 1977 Good Neighbor of the Year Award from the Torrance-South Bay YMCA.
In 1982, Ralph accepted a three-year assignment in Knebworth, England. They thoroughly enjoyed their time there; they traveled and made many new friends.
When Ralph retired, he and Barbara continued to travel, volunteer for their church, and spend time with their grandchildren. Barbara was very creative. At many family gatherings, she would put on short musicals (including props) with the grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, her sister, Jeannette Baust, her sister, Eethyl Withers, and her brother, John Hungerford, Barbara is survived by her sister, Ruth Gaddis of Florida, her two daughters and one son, all of El Segundo: Debby Dorsey (John), Tish Mitchell (Brian), and Ralph Colbert (Brenda). She also is survived by her grandchildren, Kristen Dorsey (Brett Moore), Flynn and Logan Mitchell, and Vince, Stephanie, and Tim Colbert.
A Celebration of Life will be held September 25, 2016, 2:00 p.m. at St. Cross Episcopal Church, 1818 Monterey Blvd, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254.
