Barbara Shaw Obituary
Barbara Shaw

1931 - 2015

Barbara was born and grew up in Manchester, England where she enjoyed two careers: first as a personal secretary and later as the proprietress of a lady's clothing boutique. After moving to Torrance, California in 1968, she devoted the rest of her life to caring for her husband, Donald; their children, Justine and Andrew; her mother, Florence; her dog, Robbie and her cats, Tony, Jonty, Tinker, Kim, Misty, Sam, Oliver, Peanut and Cassie. A lifelong animal lover, Barbara regularly contributed to animal welfare causes and always had at least two pets in her family, all of them taken in as strays; when one died another would quickly appear to take its place.

Despite having many health problems of her own to cope with throughout much of her adult life, Barbara was a natural-born caregiver; one of her favorite activities was visiting sick or aging friends in hospitals or nursing homes. Her friendly, kind and compassionate nature endeared her to everyone who knew her.

After being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in July 2013, Barbara faced her final battle with characteristic optimism and determination. After surgery and months of chemotherapy treatment, her body could take no more and she peacefully passed away on February 3, 2015. The family appreciates the efforts of all the doctors and nurses who cared for Barbara during her illness, and especially the wonderful people of the Palliative Care and Hospice Care teams at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance.

In addition to her husband and children, Barbara is survived by her brother, Bernard of Torrance, many friends and relatives in England, Wales, Scotland, Australia, California, Oregon, Missouri and Illinois, and by the last of her beloved cats, Peanut and Cassie.

A Private Inurnment will be at Green Hills Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
