Barbara Spaulding Van Alstine Obituary
Barbara Van Alstine

Barbara Van Alstine, nee Spaulding, passed away February 22, 2016 in Long Beach, CA. She was 2 weeks shy of 97 years old.
The fourth of four children, she was born March 6, 1919 in Kalamazoo, MI to William Henry and Jess Hutchinson Spaulding.
Her father was a football coach at what was then Western MI Teachers College. She was about 2 years old when the family moved to Minneapolis where her dad was football coach at U of MN.
The stay was a short one, the family then moving when Barbara was about 6 to Los Angeles where her father took the reins as football coach at the then budding Southern California branch of Univ. of California, later UCLA.
Barbara attended Beverly High, and later UCLA, where she received a degree in Economics.
A year or so later, on December 7, 1941, she was at a USO dance and a handsome Army guy, Ray E. Van Alstine asked her to dance. Of course, the bombing at Pearl Harbor changed the course of history forever, but they managed to keep in touch and on November 13, 1942, a Friday, they were married at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. The marriage lasted 62 years until Ray passed away in 2004.
Barbara was an active volunteer. She colunteered in the choir at Lakewood 1st United Methodist Church for over 50 years; 1300+ volunteer hours at the local Veterans Hospital; District and Unit President of United Methodist Women; on the Board of the Methodist Hospital; involved with the Madison Elementary PTA, including President; member of PEO; and a 50+ year member of Kappa Alpha Theta, a sorority at UCLA. Obviously, since they met at a dance, you can imagine that she and Ray loved to dance, so they belonged to Toppers and other dance clubs. Barbara also was a long-time PEO.
She spent the last 6 1/2 years at Sunrise Senior Living, where she enjoyed bridge and bingo, among the many activities there.
Barbara leaves behind to mourn her passing: Toby Van Alstine Hurley; Susan Van Alstine and Ron Knowles; and Mike Veltman, Linda Van Alstine Knowles's widower. Also, 6 grandchildren: Mark Veltman, Dawn Veltman Joy and Dawn Veltman Haltstead; Kevin Hurley; Lauren Knowles Laird and Darren Knowles. Her 2 sisters, her brother, and a grandson, Sean Hurley, predeceased her.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Barbara's name has been established at the church for any cash gifts people wish to donate. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
