Bertha  L. Cook Obituary
Bertha L. Cook, age 91, died at home in Ada, OK on August 2, 2010 following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She lived most of her life in the South Bay moving to Oklahoma in 2009 to be with her daughter, Colleen (Bob) Johnson. "Bert" was born at home on August 25, 1918 in Beardstown, IL to Mary (Saathoff) and Oren E. Lindley. She was the third of seven children, three of whom preceded her in death. The family moved to Redondo Beach in 1930 opening a grocery store, The Lindley Market, where several family members would eventually work. Bert graduated from Redondo Union High School and the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (BIOLA) where she developed many lifelong friendships. In 1942, she married A. Thormod "Norge" Cook of Lomita. Her life was devoted to lovingly serving her family and her God. For many years she led youth groups and taught Sunday school in Lomita and Torrance while working in her husband's business, Cook Bros. Mfg. & Supply Co. In later years she and Norge were active members of Rolling Hills Covenant Church until his death in 2004. Mrs. Cook is survived by her four children, Mary Jean (Dennis) Cope of Simi Valley, Doug (Christine) Cook of Ladera Ranch, Colleen (Bob) Johnson of Ada, OK, and Thomas (Karen) Cook of Portland, OR; ten grandchildren, Kevin (Jacqueline) Cope, Kari Cope, Kristina (Shannon) Cosart, Brian (Christina) Johnson, Adam Johnson, Jared Johnson, Jonathan (Elizabeth Brown) Cook, Erin Cook, James Cook and Laurel Cook; and five great-grandchildren, Carsen Cope, Evan Cope, Kyle Cosart, Clayton Cosart, and Brayden Johnson. Survivors also include her sister, Audria Lindley; and brothers, Walter (Ann) Lindley and Bob (Wanda) Lindley; sister-in-law, Geri Cook; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service to celebrate Bert's life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, August 23, 2010 at Rolling Hills Covenant Church North Campus Chapel, 2221 Palos Verdes Dr. No., Rolling Hills Estates, CA 90274.
