Betty Jane Burton Obituary
Betty Jane, a 50 year resident of the South Bay, passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2011 in Torrance. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Betty was 91 when she died. Betty loved life. Betty grew up in Virginia and decided to relocate to California after one particularly brutal winter. Betty enjoyed a long successful career in retail sales. She started in retail sales at a time when customer service was always important. She carried that work ethic, which was demonstrated by the many letters she received from satisfied customers, until she retired in her early eighties. Betty always kept very active. She worked out at a gym a couple times a week and enjoyed line dancing at the Torrance YMCA several times a week. Betty enjoyed her many friends and spent many wonderful mornings doing crossword puzzles with her coffee klatch, water aerobics during the summer months with her swimming buddies and serious shopping with her cohorts from work. Betty was an incredibly fashionable dresser and was good at finding the sales on the latest trends. Her son Davie was her proudest achievement. Betty loved to go back east and visit him and looked forward to his trips to California. Betty was also very proud of her grandchildren Scott and Sarah and her great grandchildren. Betty is survived by her son, Davie Cottrell of Hallieford, VA; two grandchildren: Scott Cottrell of Kwajalein Atoll Marshall Islands and Sarah Brooks of Fredericksburg, VA; and 4 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear friend and adopted daughter, Micki Jeffries. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bessie Jane and John "Clifford" Vorwerck; and her brother, John "Jack" Vorwerck. The Memorial Service will be held at White & Day Colonial Mortuary Chapel on Friday, February 18, 2011 at 1:00pm. A reception follows in the Colonial Lighthouse Room until 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite animal charity. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
