Betty McVay Kruse Obituary
Betty McVay Kruse

February 5, 1925 - October 1, 2015

Long-time San Pedro resident Betty McVay Kruse passed away peacefully on October 1, 2015.

Betty was born February 5, 1925, in Wilmington,California, the only daughter to Frank and Pearl Kuhn. She was raised under the watchful eyes of older brothers, Bruce, Bert, Bennie, Billy and Frank. She attended Narbonne High School and married Bert McVay, a San Pedro dockworker and U.S. Navy seaman. She had two sons, Bert (Duffy) and Danny, and still made time to work as a clerk and food service manager for Safeway stores.

Her later marriage to Henry Kruse, an American Airlines executive, sparked her lifelong interest in travel and sightseeing. She toured extensively throughout the U.S., Europe and Central America. She found cruising to be her most enjoyable enterprise and carried it to a high art. Many times she invited family members and friends to join in the experiences with her and to share her love for adventure (and to make sure her stories and her hundreds of travel destination refrigerator magnets were really authentic!).

She was one of the first original homeowners of The Gardens development in San Pedro and built many neighborhood friendships from this 'home base' that exist to this day. She was a loving and dedicated mother, who always had a family history story to share, and every sentence was punctuated with laughter. She was independent but never lonely; self-reliant and responsible, but always caring. Later in life, she added two small dogs, Sadie and Sophie, to her inner circle, and they, in turn contributed to her joy.

She was preceded in death by her aforementioned brothers, stepsisters Bonnie and Barbara, nephew Bruce Kuhn, Jr., and grandson, Greg McVay.

She is survived by her two sons Duffy and Danny, his wife Helen; nephew Buddy Kuhn, his wife Marie and their two children, Andrew and Zoe; nephew Don Kuhn, his wife Beverly, nephew Chuck Witty, nieces Jayme and Frankie and nephews Steven and Frank; granddaughters Danielle Overli and Deborah Jarrett; grandson Ryan McVay and his wife Jennifer; great grandsons Ian McVay and Danny and David Jarrett.

Betty was surely a special woman and would have wanted all who fondly remember her to know that (in the words of her favorite entertainer) "I did it my way." Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
