Bob Von Gorres Obituary
Bob Von Gorres

April 23, 1940 – Dec. 7, 2016

Bob Von Gorres, a resident of Lomita and a longtime employee of the Gardena Valley News, passed away in his sleep on Dec. 7, 2016. He was 76.
He was born in Los Angeles (Bell, Calif), the only child in an upper-middle class family. A devout Catholic, he attended Mt. Carmel High School and was a parishioner of St. Margaret Mary Church in Lomita, at the time of his death. He earned his degree at USC, and spent more than a decade as a sales rep for TWA Airlines in the 1970s. Pursuing his passion for horses, he had a brief stint as a copy editor for the Racing Forum publication — with the hopes of being a race handicapper. Disillusioned by his role at RF he resigned, then enrolled at El Camino College to study journalism, and later became the ECC Warwhoop newspaper ad manager. That job led to his hire with the Gardena Valley News in July 1989, where he served for nearly 30 years as the commercial sales director.
Bob was a man with a generous heart, a booming "radio" voice and an appreciation for detail. Horse racing was his great love, thriftiness his credo, and planning his retirement his never-ending preoccupation. He leaves behind a wealth of friends and family, and his two cats, Zero and Minus. Bob is preceded in death by his loving parents and his beloved cat, Zero 1.
