Bobby Bates Robert Obituary
Robert "Bobby" Bates
March 30, 1923 -
April 1, 2017

Robert "Bobby" Bates, a local Manhattan Beach resident of nearly 60 years, recently passed away on April 1st, one day after his 94th birthday. Bobby was an avid volleyball player, and skilled golfer, whose love of the game was only secondary to the enjoyment he found in nature.
Born in San Point, Idaho, in 1923, Bobby and his family eventually settled in Santa Monica, where he enrolled into Venice High School, meeting Harriet Reid, the woman who would become his beloved wife of over seventy years (who at the time of his passing, had preceded him in death 9 months prior). After high school, Bobby briefly went to Santa Monica City College, before ultimately choosing to pursue his undergraduate degree at The University of Montana, after having been scouted by their athletics department for his first-string skills as a fullback (in football). After receiving his bachelor's degree in English, Bobby and his family then moved to Manhattan Beach, where he established himself with a career in the aerospace industry.
Bobby's family wishes to sincerely thank the Manhattan Beach volleyball community, with a special thanks to his very good friend Mike Dodd, who along with many others from the Marine Street crew, wholeheartedly supported him in his final years. Bobby leaves behind his three children, Karen Baker, Bobby Bates, and Janice Weaver; along with three granddaughters, Samantha, Melanie, and Tracy; and great-grandchildren Dylan, Logan, Scarlett, and Jackson.
