Carlene Thune Obituary
Carlene Thune passed away early in the morning December 16, 2010 from complications due to her long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born March 28, 1935, the youngest of seven children to Edward and Carrie Tanner in the coal mining community of Freeburn, KY. She grew up and attended elementary school in Freeburn and graduated from the county high school in nearby Phelps, KY in 1952. After nearly a year of study at Pikeville, KY junior college, she joined the Marine Corps to serve her country and enhance her educational opportunities. She was assigned to duty at the Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro (Santa Ana), CA. There she met her husband of 54 years, Bob, who was serving on the same base with the Naval Civil Engineering Corps. After she and Bob were discharged in the fall of 1956, they were married in Freeburn, KY on November 24, 1956. They later moved to Madison, WI where she worked to support his completion of a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for two years while a homemaker and before becoming a mom. In 1962, the family moved to Torrance, CA, which has been their home ever since. Carlene loved to read, cook, bake, entertain, camp and travel; she mostly loved her family and being a homemaker. She was a longtime member and participant in the many activities of the Redondo Beach First United Methodist Church and worked for close to ten years as secretary for Hawthorne United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Bob; daughters, Kari (Joel) Daniel and Cheryl (Chris) Wilson; son, Brian (Cheri) Thune; and four grandchildren, Jack, Rachael and Fletcher Wilson and Andy Meisbach. She is also survived by her next older sister, Bobby Biliter of Majestic, KY and a host of nephews, nieces and friends. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 2pm in the Redondo Beach First United Methodist Church, 243 South Broadway, Redondo Beach, CA.
