Carlos Rico (Charlie)

Carlos Rico (Charlie), a long time resident of Wilmington, California died peacefully in his home on July 2, 2016. He was born on April 12, 1927. He joined the Navy in 1945 and served as a Navy Corpsman. He married Bernice Stathes and had two daughters, Charlotte and Terry. He was a graphic artist and became the first college illustrator at Harbor College in Wilmington. His artistic career encompassed many arenas. He drew sports cartoons for the San Pedro News Pilot, taught calligraphy at Harbor College, designed restaurant menus, and created letterheads and logos for many businesses.

He joined the Lion's Club of Wilmington in 1996. As a member, he helped raise money to build a home for Habitat for Humanity, was publicity chairman for the downhill races in San Pedro, participated in Flag Day ceremonies at various elementary schools in Wilmington, and helped organize many pancake breakfasts. He also served on PCAC (Port Committee Advisory Commission.)

Carlos is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Whittington. He is also survived by grandchildren, Carin Meister, Matthew and Joseph Nuez, and 8 great grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held at Saint Sophia Cathedral in Los Angeles (1324 S. Normandie Avenue) on July 12 at 11 a.m. followed by interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Long Beach (1500 E. San Antonio Drive). Viewing will be held at Saint Sophia on July 11th at 6p.m. followed by Trisagion Services (Wake) at 7 p.m. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
