Carol Marie (Plant) Gober Obituary
Carol Gober passed away on September 6, 2011 in Torrance, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She was 74 years old. Carol was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 20, 1936 to Walter and Alma Plant. She was the oldest of two children. Carol enjoyed the extended family in Chicago and grew up with many aunts, uncles, and cousins nearby. At the start of high school, Carol's family moved to Indiana to start a family farm. Carol made the adjustment to the small community but always longed for the atmosphere of Chicago. Shortly after graduation, Carol took an opportunity to hitch a ride with her cousin, Howard, and his family as they made a move to California, giving her an opportunity to be with family in a new city. The transition fit her very well. Howard and his family bought a house in Pacific Palisades and found themselves neighbors to Vivian Vance and other exciting people in the Los Angeles area. Carol got a job at First National in Santa Monica. She truly enjoyed the job, especially seeing the many stars that frequented the bank. It was at First National Bank that Carol met Robert Gober an accountant and auditor. They started dating and by 1958 they were married. The couple lived in Santa Monica but a few years later moved to Torrance and bought their first home. Carol enjoyed the South Bay and found great joy in her household. She raised 6 children, numerous, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and birds. Having pets, family, and friends around her was always a priority and she thrived in this atmosphere. As time went on, and her grandchildren were born, Carol found even greater joy in showering them with presents along with taking them out to eat and shopping with them as they came to visit. After her husband's passing Carol would walk to local stores and learned to use the bus system. She enjoyed going to the theater and in particular concerts at the Hollywood Bowl. Christmas became a favorite time for her. She had a generous heart and loved to shop for gifts for everyone from the women and children of His Nesting Place, filling shoeboxes for the Samaritan's Purse ministry, and, of course, her grandchildren. Carol is survived by her sister, Doris (Ed); daughters, Liesa (Mike), Jill (Gale) and Maria (Scott); her sons, Dan (Angela), Andrew, and Jed (Johanna); along with 12 grandchildren; and, as she just found out, her first great-grandchild. Services will be held on September 10, 3:00 p.m., at Green Hills Memorial Chapel, 27501 S. Western Avenue, Rancho Palos Verdes, followed by a reception at Trinity Lutheran Church in San Pedro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to His Nesting Place, 350 E. Market Street, Long Beach, CA 90805. Please sign the guestbook for Carol at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
