Carroll Joseph Bender

July 4, 1917 - February 23, 2012

Carroll "Joe" Bender was born to Rena and Robert Bender. He was born in Los Angeles but moved to Berendo Avenue in Torrance in the spring of 1930 when he was a young boy. He graduated from Torrance High School. After graduation he apprenticed at National Supply Co., in Torrance, and then worked at Todd Shipyard in San Pedro. He went to Compton College after work to study for his pilot's license. After Pearl Harbor was bombed on the December 7, he enlisted on the 11th. He eventually joined the 8th Air Force, 337th Sqd. 96th Bomb Group at Snetterton Heath in England as a B-17 Bomber Pilot. He successfully completed 25 bombing missions during WW II over Germany. He worked on Project Aphrodite while in the Air Force. He married Yvonne Filbert and had a daughter, Linda. He retired from the Air Force with the rank of Major. After retirement from the Air Force, he taught shop and welding at El Rancho High in Pico Rivera. He was well known for his great stories, his caring heart and his sense of humor.
