Chalmers (Chal) Andrew Strayer, a 60 year resident of Torrance, passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior on September 6, 2011. He was born on September 16, 1921 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
After graduating from Johnstown High School, he moved to Glendale to attend the Aeronautical Industries Technical Institute and continue his dream of building airplanes. In 1942, he convinced Helene to come to California and they were married. This year they celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. During World War II Chal served with the 509th Atomic Bomb Group as a decoder, stationed on the island of Tinian. After the war, Chal moved his family to Torrance. He began work as an aeronautical engineer at Northrop Aircraft in Hawthorne. He retired from Northrop in 1984 after 37 years and multiple patents.
Chal and Helene raised their four children in Torrance where they were active in the Scouts, YMCA and Little League. After his retirement he and Helene enjoyed many wonderful travels to Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska as well as numerous trips to Lake Tahoe and all over the United States. He was a great fan of the Dodgers, Lakers and UCLA Bruins. He loved his dogs, gardening, camping, fishing, bridge, fixing things, and playing golf. He deeply loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren delighting in their activities. He was a dependable source of wisdom and guidance for his family and friends. He remained an active member of First Christian Church of Torrance for over 50 years serving as an usher and later a Deacon. Chal will be remembered for his kindness, fairness, intelligence, humor and tremendous work ethic. He will be dearly missed.
Chal leaves behind his beloved wife Helene, sons David Strayer (Joanne) and Gregory Strayer (Beckie), and twin daughters Patricia Strayer (Noel) and Debra Knudson (Dan), 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Thursday, September 15, at First Christian Church, 2930 El Dorado St, Torrance with viewing at 10 am and services at 11 am. He will be interned at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes. A message to the family can be written at www.greenhillsmortuary.com.
