89 of San Pedro, passed away on December 11, 2015. Charles was born in Anaheim on November 10, 1926, but lived in San Pedro his entire life, having attended Leland Street Elementary, Dana Junior High, and San Pedro High Schools. After high school, Charles served in the Navy and was aboard the Naval Destroyer USS Gurke during WWII, and was in Bellingham WA when the Japanese surrendered. He had a passion for being on the sea and continued to follow that by spending many years at sea as a tuna fisherman. Charles also started, owned and operated the San Pedro Shoe Repair on Pacific Avenue, where as a dedicated craftsman he served his loyal customers for nearly 50 years. Charles loved music and dancing, and was a member of the LA Swing Dance Club and a longtime member of the Elks Club. He also shared a passion for traveling, his favorite destination being Spain. Charles was preceded in death by Ruth Moreno, Robert Moreno, and Cheryl Bernal. He is survived by his brothers Bill Moreno, Bob Bernal, Mike Bernal, Art Bernal, Felipe Bernal, and Rudy Bernal; children Bernadette Webb, Curt Bernal, Brian Bernal, and Ron Bernal; grandchildren Tianna, Justin, Michele, Raneen, Brennen, Teuila, Daniel and Katherine; and great grandchildren Lucia and Kamryn. Visitation will be at McNerney's Mortuary on Friday December 18th from 3-7 PM, with a funeral Mass to be celebrated at Mary Star of the Sea in San Pedro on Saturday, December 19th at 10:30 AM with burial to follow at Green Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Charles' memory.
