Charles Raphael aka Charlie, Chuck, Captain and PoPo, passed away December 3, 2010 at home with his wife, Jacqueline at his side. It was an unexpected death as Charles led life to the fullest. He was born December 7, 1925 in the San Joaquin farming town of Reedley, CA, leaving to attend San Jose State University. Charles moved to Palos Verdes in 1952 when he started his career as a pilot with United Airlines; a career that lasted 49 years. His flying career began in the last days of World War II and he earned his civil and commercial pilots' licenses under the GI bill. Charles later years were spent flying, but as a passenger with his wife traveling the world and visiting family. Charles is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; his children, Lisa Raphael, Sue Evans Hatano, Lisa Evans Hayes, Herve and Arnaud Solandt, Sophie Pelletier Martinelli, Claire Kiger; and 13 grandchildren in CA and CT. He is also survived by his sister, Rose (Raphael) Smith; brothers, Mike, Manuel, David and Joseph and brother-in-law, Jacques Bonhomme. Charles was preceded in death by his wives, Zella (Gilio) Raphael and Carol (Moore) Evans Raphael; brothers, Albert and Victor Raphael; and son-in-law, Mike Pelletier.
