Christine Jameson Obituary
Jameson, Christine
November 9, 1929 - July 21, 2011
A life dedicated to voluntary arts museum
work and her beloved family
Born Mary Christine Meyers in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Chris spent most of her early life near Philadelphia and attended Friends Central School. She majored in English Literature at Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania where she met her husband, Bill, and they married in the Merion Friends Meeting, Pennsylvania. Bill's work with the Bethlehem Steel Company took them to Annapolis, Maryland, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and then Palos Verdes Estates, California in 1954. They moved to Pottstown, Pennsylvania in 1963, soon after which Chris had her first experience as a docent at the Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library in Delaware.
Chris and Bill later returned to California and in 1979 Chris became a Docent for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Her involvement with the Docent Council has given her a rich and stimulating voluntary career, and an introduction to some of her closest friends. An inquisitive and thorough researcher, she had a talent for inspiring young and old, experts and novices, with her ability to make objects come alive within their historical context. A Docent Emeritus, Chris toured a wide range of exhibitions and developed a special expertise in Islamic Art.
Chris and Bill enjoyed many years of off-road driving down canyons across the deserts of the South West viewing geological formations, historical sites and rock collecting. Death Valley, Joshua Tree National Park, and Anza Borrego State Park were particular favorites.
Chris was an exceptionally talented homemaker and artist, skilled at pen and ink drawing, photography, knitting, sewing and other crafts, an inventive cook and gardener of exotic plants. She was a voracious reader with a love of poetry, noted for her speed and range of material from science fiction and historical romance to erudite non-fiction. Loving, kind and humorous (including bad puns!), Chris will be remembered for offering an intelligent, compassionate perspective and for her devotion to her family in whom she instilled a lifelong passion for language and learning, humor, love and family.
In good health up to the time of her sudden, recent illness, she died on Thursday July 21, 2011 due to complications from pneumonia.
Chris is survived by her husband of more than 61 years, Bill; son Bill and his wife Darlene; daughter Pat; and son Bob and his wife Michele; grandchildren Peter, John, Paul, Marie, James and Christina; and great grandchildren Phoenix and Anna.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Chris's life will be held at Rice Mortuary in Torrance on Wednesday July 27, 2011 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers please send donations in Chris's honor to your favorite charity or to the LACMA Docent Council Bus Fund which helps to bring children to experience the joys and wonders within the museum, c/o Docent Council Bus Fund, 5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036.
