Claudia Jeanne Smith Obituary
March 6, 1927 - January 21, 2011

Claudia was born in Lennox, CA to Lon and Hazel Garbett. She grew up in Los Angeles. She attended Dorsey High School and received a bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Southern California, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She got into fashion modeling and became "L.A.'s First Super Model", which is the sub-title of her recently published autobiography, "Ms. NQR". After an illustrious modeling career and the birth of her son, John, she was a fashion designer, returned to U.S.C., obtained an architecture degree, practiced architecture, studied improv at the Groundlings Theatre, acting at Howard Fine and painting at the Palos Verdes Art Center with Andrew Foster. She married William F. Smith over 30 years ago and she and Bill had enjoyed many wonderful years together fishing in Mexico and Montana, skiing in Utah and California, sunbathing in Malibu and Manhattan Beach, traveling all over the world, eating dinner while watching television together and enjoying the company of family and friends. They had resided on the Palos Verdes Peninsula since their marriage. Claudia was a beautiful, intense, creative, soulful, passionate and loving person. She was a fantastic and caring mother and a dedicated wife. She loved a lot of people and had many dear friends and relatives. She leaves behind her husband, Bill of Rancho Palos Verdes; her brother, Jim Garbett of Manhattan Beach; John, Bridget, Susan, Robert, James Joseph, Richard, Leslie, Shona, Drew, Connor, Tracy Ray, Rachel; grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; sorority sisters, and friends from Bristol Farms. She was just about to paint Rachel's portrait when she passed away. Now she's painting her masterpiece. Claudia's Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 28, at 12 noon at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, 3301 Via Campesina, Palos Verdes Estates.
