George Coury
1924 - 2017

George Coury was born at home in Aliquippa, PA, March 12, 1924, the 5th of 6 children, to Amelia and Louis Coury. In 1934, Amelia moved with the children to Brooklyn, New York.
George graduated from Samuel Gompers High School in NYC in 1942, and on his 19th birthday in 1943, was drafted into the army. He served in the Infantry in Italy and France and was discharged in 1945. After coming home he contributed to the support of his family by working as an auto mechanic.
He and Amy Renneke met at the Madison Square Garden Ice Skating Rink in NYC in 1948. They were married by a Justice of the Peace in Yonkers, New York in 1953. They moved to Los Angeles in 1954 where their three children were born.
George worked as an auto mechanic, joined a Little Theater group and did "extra" work in movies and TV. He was also a dedicated family man. While Amy worked in her career in nursing education, George helped raise the children and the family spent their vacation time together.
George worked as a Marine Machinist at Todd Shipyards in San Pedro for 21 years. His co-workers enjoyed his humorous comments and practical jokes. After retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling. He and Amy were married 64 years and lived in Torrance 47 years.
George died peacefully at home on April 18, 2017, at the age of 93. He will be missed by all who knew him.
