Daniel (Dan) Lavarini Obituary
Daniel (Dan) Lavarini

1926 - 2016

Dan Lavarini passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, after returning from a walk near the cliffs along Paseo Del Mar. The official cause of death is a combination of cardiac and pulmonary arrest. Born on July 11, 1926, he lived all of his 90 years in San Pedro, CA, except for his service in the U.S. Army during WWII in Germany and Belgium. During the closing months of the war, he crossed the Rhine River and participated in the closure of the Ruhr Pocket. At the end of the war, he spent time at the Czech border and took leave in Switzerland. His experiences in WWII dampened his enthusiasm for travel and camping, although he was dragged on trips to Italy, St. Croix, Norway, and various California national parks by his beloved wife Sherry, who passed away in 2003. He worked many years at both Consolidated and Sun Lumberyards, retiring in 1988. Dan was active in his parish Mary Star of the Sea and won an award for Outstanding Volunteer in 2011. After retiring, he could be found most mornings walking with his posse along Paseo del Mar, engaging in passionate discussions about politics. Dan loved bowling (he won a few trophies), playing cards, watching football and baseball, as well as reading military history. He took great pride in tending his yard growing tomatoes, zucchini and green beans. He was always a gracious host to all who sat at his table. Dan is survived by his sister Angie Dimon; his brothers-in-law Skip Dimon and Joe Goar; his three sons and three daughters-in-law Dennis and Theresa Lavarini; Larry and Cindy Lavarini; and Eddy and Cathy Lavarini; and his four grandchildren Nicholas, Mallory, Hayley, and Matthew Lavarini; and many nieces and nephews, including those in the Italian towns of Vaggimal, Ascoli Piceno, and Mestre. His sister Mary (Lavarini) Goar passed away in 2012. Dan was a beloved brother, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend, and will be missed by many.
