Delmar Dean Stanton Obituary
Delmar Dean Stanton, loving husband, devoted father and loyal friend to all fortunate enough to know him, passed away on January 22 in Torrance, California, at the age of 82. Born in Minnesota and raised in Illinois, "Del" moved with his family to Long Beach and attended Long Beach City College and UCLA, where he received a degree in business. In those years, as a member of Tong and Sigma Nu fraternities, he formed bonds with an extraordinary group of friends - and cherished them for his entire life. Del then joined the Air Force, where he attained the rank of captain, was awarded the American Spirit of Honor Award, and soon married Diane Moon, his wife of 57 years. Turning to business - with a natural talent for sales - Del began work at radio station KIEV, then the Occidental Insurance Company, and finally at the commercial real estate offices of Coldwell Banker. His remarkable success over 30 years with the company earned him not only the title of first vice president, but long-standing respect for his sharp intuition, unquestionable honesty and wry humor. He brought the same dedication to his role as a Rotarian, and was honored with The Paul Harris Fellow Award for his efforts to promote "the furtherance of better understanding between peoples of the world". But above and beyond his accomplishments, Del was one of a kind. The kind who could charm a blackjack table, recite a Shakespeare sonnet, lead a broker to the money, cut to the jist, level his adversaries, exalt his friends and spin a story you didn't want to end. But it is his story, and exceptional life, that will always be remembered. Del was also forever grateful for the absolute support, encouragement and love of Diane, who served as the foundation which allowed him to do and accomplish what he set out to do. Besides his wife, Del is survived by his children and their families, including Greg and Theresa, Todd, Bruce and Monica, Paula and Tom and grandchildren, Nicole, Colleen, Grace and Timothy. A celebration by friends and family of Del's life will be held at the Palos Verdes Golf Club on February 4, 2011 beginning at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Del's name may be sent to Rotary Club of Del Amo, P.O Box 3927, Torrance, CA 90510, or Malaga Cove Plaza Library, 2400 Via Campesina, Palos Verdes Estates, CA 90274.
