Diane Rae Sappington, 78, of Hawthorne, died unexpectedly at home on Sunday, June12, 2011. She was born in 1933 to the late Grandin "Buck" and Mary Spaulding in Los Angeles, CA. Diane graduated fromWashington High School in 1952. Shemarried her high school sweetheart Howard Sappington, and they lived in Hawthorne formost of their 59 years of marriage. One of Diane's first jobs was with Waltco where besides office duties; she worked a lathe and drill press. Diane later worked at North American as an executive secretary. When her children were school age, she drove school bus for Inglewood Christian School. She worked as a volunteer for Jr. All-American Football, Stroke Association, and other organizations; and received numerous recognitions for her efforts. Diane also volunteered for AFS where she hosted her "AFS daughter" Annie de Vits (Blum) from Belgium. To her, life was about helping and caring for her family, friends, neighbors, and the community. She loved her Great Danes, gardening, reading, football, taking her granddaughters to Washington DC, her 4 AM morning walks through the neighborhood and strong coffee. Diane was the lucky recipient of numerous "donations" from the Pioneer Casino and other establishments in Laughlin, Vegas and Reno. Diane will be lovingly remembered by Howard; her 4 children and their spouses: Steve (Nancy), Lee (Sandra), Guy (Leah) and Julie (Robert) Golden; and her 6granddaughters, Kelsey, Lindsey, Alyssa, Shayna, Jodi and Amanda.She was predeceased by her sister, Sandy Longmore. In lieu offlowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to USO or John Wayne Cancer Institute. A celebration of her life will be held at the VFW, 4563 W. 131st St, Hawthorne on Friday, July 1. Doors open at 10:00, program starts at 10:30 (appropriate casual attire).
