Domenick Miretti

Domenick Louis Miretti, 83 of Harbor City, passed away on Wednesday, February 17,2016 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Domenick was born September 12,1932 on the Palos Verdes Rancho where his family farmed. He continued to live on ranches here , in Chino and El Segundo until his family settled in Harbor City. He remained on either 252nd or 251st street for the rest of his life. During his childhood, Domenick's family began leaving farming and joining the ILWU as Longshoremen. Domenick followed in his father's and uncles' footsteps and became part of Local 13 in 1951. Several years later, as he loaded and unloaded cargo and watched ships coming and going, he decided he wanted to learn more about other countries and the world so he started college to study geography. He began his college career at Harbor College for his AA degree. He moved on to Long Beach State (now CSULB) for a Bachelor's and Master's degree. He then attended UCLA where he earned his Doctorate degree. Domenick always continued to Longshore. He left Local 13 to Local 63 to be a Marine Clerk. He began teaching geography at Dodson Jr. High from 1965-1970. He began teaching as a professor of geography at East Los Angeles College from 1970 until the time of his passing. While at East LA College, he developed the International Trade Program. He married his 2 careers together by being the Senior Liaison to the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and by being involved with Metrans and CITT with CSULB and USC. As a young man Domenick attended Narbonne High School where he met Carol Hamilton in the 9th grade. They dated and were married in 1956. This May would have been their 60th anniversary. In 1960, their family was complete as their daughter Sharon was born. Along with his wife Carol and daughter Sharon he leaves behind his grandchildren Devin and Lauren Christiansen, his sister Lydia Albertoni, his Albertoni and Hamilton nieces and nephews, his Barra and Miretti family as well as many friends and co-workers. He has been preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Irma Miretti and son in law Jay Christiansen. Services will be held at Green Hills Cemetery 27501 South Western Ave., Rancho Palos Verdes on Thursday February 25, 2016. A viewing will be at 11:30 preceding the Service at 12 noon. As an expression of love and sympathy, you may send flowers or make a scholarship donation to: Propeller Club of Los Angeles-Long Beach P.O.Box 4250 Sunland, Ca. 91041 with a notation that the funds are to go to the ILWU / Propeller Club Memorial Scholarship Fund - in memory of Domenick Miretti.
