Dorothy Holzgrafe Cadien

August 13, 1916 - March 1, 2013

Born in Hemet, CA, she moved with her parents, Fred and Elsie Holzgrafe to San Pedro as a child. She had no siblings. A graduate of San Pedro High School, she attended UCLA graduating with a degree in education. She was a member of and active participant in the sorority PEO. She taught in several schools within California, with most of her career spent as a kindergarten, first and second grade teacher for Los Angeles Unified School District. She retired in 1973. Married Walter Cadien in 1941 and remained so until his death in 1991. They traveled extensively through Europe, Africa, South America and Asia, as well as within the western United States and Canada. She lived in San Pedro most of her life, moving into retirement to the Inland Empire in Hemet and Idyllwild after 1973. Following Walter's death, she returned to San Pedro to be near family. She had a circle of great friends in high school that remained throughout her life, but she outlived nearly all of them. She is survived by a son, Don; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen; grandchildren, Mary and Jeffrey; and great-grandson, Jude. She also leaves behind her caregivers, Nelly DeJesus and her family, who lovingly cared for her and her home the last few years. She succumbed, Friday, to pneumonia after several days of hospitalization. Her passing was peaceful and without pain. A Memorial Celebration for her will be held on May 4th.
