Dorothy Metros Obituary
Dorothy Metros, age 80, died peacefully at her home in Manhattan Beach on August 1, 2011. Dorothy was born in Dearborn, Michigan on May 28, 1931. She was predeceased by her parents, Sam & Costula Metros, and her brother Jimmy. Dorothy was a lifelong educator who was motivated to pursue a degree in special education due to her early experiences with a cousin who was autistic. Dorothy earned her bachelor's degree at Western Michigan University and her master's at USC. After college, Dorothy moved to California where she loved tennis, skiing & golf. During the 1950's, she taught school in Mammoth and at Santa Monica High School, before becoming Dean of Students at Torrance High School, a position she held for nearly two decades. After retiring in 1986, Dorothy split her time between Manhattan Beach and her second home in Palm Desert. She was a wonderful cook who loved to entertain. She was an avid reader and enjoyed chatting with friends about her favorite TV shows. Dorothy loved dogs, and she leaves behind "Dani," a rescue who is the last in a long line of her beloved boxers. She is survived by numerous cousins, as well as many friends who remember her for her keen intelligence, humor, and ability to "tell it like it is." Throughout her life, Dorothy was a generous contributor to the Special Olympics, Boxer Rescue, and the Salvation Army. Donations to any of these charities would be an appropriate and appreciated way to celebrate Dorothy's life. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
