Dorothy Rind Obituary
Born December 1, 1917 and raised in Missoula, Dorothy attended the University of Montana, Dorothy and was initiated into the Alpha Nu Chapter of Sigma Kappa in 1937. She was a member of Kappa Epsilon, a pharmacy sorority, and the drum corps of the university band. She graduated in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. In 1943 Dorothy entered the Women's Army Corps, assigned to various army hospitals as the pharmacy officer, as well as a training officer in chemical warfare. Honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant, she then worked as a pharmacist and was the co-owner of a pharmacy in the South Bay for many years. Dorothy was first married to Hurley Rind and later to Harold Essex, MD. As a member of the South Bay Sigma Kappa Alumnae Chapter since 1989, Dorothy had been a very involved member. She held the office of vice president of programs and was the chapter's delegate to the South Bay Panhellenic Association for several years. Dorothy received a Community Achievement Award in 1996 from the South Bay Panhellenic Association. Dorothy's interests and involvements were many. She has had a private pilot's license, was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Women in Military Service for America, American Pharmaceutical Association, Women Veterans Association and University of Montana Alumni Association. In 1990 The Downey Public Library awarded her a certificate of appreciation in the READ Literacy Program. She has been a member of the Deaconate of the First Christian Church of Torrance and a Stephen Minister, a lay minister caring for those in need of comfort. A certificate of appreciation in recognition of outstanding service to the Naval Sea Cadet Corps as chairman of the ROTC Awards Committee was presented to her in 1996 by the DAR. In her later years, Dorothy continued to be a treasured member within the fellowship and faith of her church. Funeral services will be held at the First Christian Church, 2930 El Dorado Street, Torrance, CA 90503 at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 27 with a graveside burial service at Inglewood Park Cemetery at about 2:30.
