Obituary Condolences

Dorothy Marie Sumich
Passed away peacefully on April 20, 2013 at the age of 88. She was born in Jamaica, Queens, New York on January 3, 1925 to Captain Harry Jensen of Denmark and his wife Loretta Woods. She was preceded in death by her parents; older brothers Captain Bill Jensen, Chief Engineer Harold Jensen, and her little brother Captain Larry Jensen; as well as her husband Sam. She is survived by her sons Bobby (Donna) and Richard (Mary), daughter Diane, grandchildren Kimberly (Anthony Lisica) and Michael (Melissa), four great grandchildren, with a fifth due in May, as well as many nieces and nephews. Dorothy moved to San Pedro with her parents and brothers at the age of two, and went to school in San Pedro, graduating from San Pedro High School, where she met her future husband, Sam, with the class of 1942. After high school, and during World War II, she worked at Ft. MacArthur where she was known for her excellent secretarial skills. Sam was in the navy during this time, but against all odds, they married in San Francisco in 1945 and were together for 66 years. Dorothy was a loving wife and mother to her three children. She devoted her life to them, involving herself in all of their childhood activities. She was an excellent homemaker, a wonderful cook, and she took pride in raising her family, sometimes doing it on her own, while her husband travelled for business. She was known for making holidays extra special for her family, spending many hours cooking, decorating and shopping for them. Those who knew Dorothy would agree she was a classy and gracious, but private woman, who was always impeccably dressed. She was an exceptionally witty woman, who always knew the right thing to say. Dorothy was a devout Catholic who enjoyed Sunday Croatian Mass. For many years she was a volunteer for San Pedro Meals on Wheels, serving as president for several terms. The Sumich family would like to thank Always Best Care, and Dorothy's personal caregiver Hope Winkler, for providing her with comfort and compassion during her final months. A viewing will be held on Thursday, April 25 from 3:00 - 6:00 pm at McNerneys Mortuary. The funeral mass will be Friday, April 26 at 9:00am at Mary Star of the Sea Church. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dorothy's name to The Boys and Girls Club of San Pedro or to The Veterans Health Administration.
