Dr. Alice M. Perkin Obituary
Born to Evald and Audrey Jorgensen on April 9, 1926 in San Diego, the longtime Torrance and Redondo Beach resident passed away peacefully on January 18, 2011. Dr. Perkin received her master's degree in English and a doctorate in education and enjoyed a career as an English teacher. She taught at Gardena High School for one year and at Torrance High School for 23 years. The only child of a naval officer, Alice grew up in Hawaii and Samoa in the 1930s. Upon returning to the states, she graduated from Washington High School in San Francisco in 1944. While at WHS, Alice was a tennis and swimming star. After high school, Alice attended College of Pacific, where she met her future husband, Ken. One of her sorority sisters at COP was Jeannette Morrison, who later gained fame as actress Janet Leigh. After their wedding in 1948, Ken and Alice settled in the South Bay to raise a family. She later took a job at Northrop aircraft in Hawthorne and then returned to college to finish her studies and obtain her teaching certification. After her retirement from teaching in 1991, Alice enjoyed a comfortable life filled with family, friends and travel. She was a favorite customer at Joe's, the well-known Redondo Beach eatery. Dr. Perkin was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in her late 70s. She faced and endured this terrible affliction with the kindness, sweetness, optimism and courage that were hallmarks of her personality. Preceded in death by her husband, she is survived by her sons, David, Gregg and Larry Perkin; along with three grandsons. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 28, 2011, 1:00 p.m. at Green Hills Memorial Chapel. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
