South Bay Orthopedic Pioneer - Obituary Condolences
Passed away on January 11, 2011. He was 88 years old. Dr. Fishel was born on March 3, 1922 in Raleigh, North Carolina, but was raised in the Lancaster, Pennsylvania area. He graduated from West York High School in York, Pennsylvania in 1940. He served in the United States Army as a medical technician on a hospital ship in the Pacific theater during World War II and on his return attended Gettysburg College and graduated in 1945. He then attended medical school at Temple University in Philadelphia and obtained a medical degree in 1950. Dr. Fishel interned at the Los Angeles County Hospital in 1951 and completed orthopedic residency at the San Diego County General Hospital in July 1955. Dr. Fishel was a member of the first group of orthopedic surgeons in the South Bay area. He was also one of the founding physicians of Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance and served as Chief of Staff of the South Bay Hospital in 1964 and 1965. In 1964 he was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and was later honored as a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners. He was one of the first surgeons to perform hip replacement surgery in Southern California. Dr. Fishel met his life's companion, Mary Ann Preach in 1955, and together they enjoyed travel, several sports and hobbies. An avid pilot, he owned three aircraft over time and acquired several thousand hours of flying time. They completed cross country flights throughout the United States and Canada. Their international travels took them to five continents and a round-the-world trip in 1977. Sports activities included snow skiing, water skiing, boating and finally golf. Dr. Fishel joined the Virginia Country Club in Long Beach and enjoyed daily golf until illness reduced his activity early in 2010. Dr. Fishel is survived by his sister, Mrs. Helen Kingston of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and a niece, Ms. Marianne Johnson of Ephrata, Pennsylvania. A memorial service will be held for Dr. Fishel at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Redondo Beach at 10:30 am on February 15, 2011. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
